Van Buren to Welcome Dedicated Building Inspector in August 2026 Updated Ordinance 446 Strengthens Permit Process, Safety Standards, and Property Protections

Van Buren, Missouri — The City of Van Buren will add a Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer beginning in August 2026. This step advances the Board of Aldermen’s ongoing work to strengthen governance, enforce consistent standards, and deliver improved services to residents.

The position supports implementation of Ordinance 446, recently adopted to update and clarify building permit requirements under Section 405.150 of the City Code. The ordinance modernizes administration for new construction, remodels, additions, demolitions, structural alterations, and related work.

Permits are required before commencing most building or structural work to verify compliance with applicable codes. Minor projects below a $1,000 construction value threshold do not require permits.

Code-compliant construction ensures that buildings remain structurally sound and that plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other systems operate reliably in accordance with applicable standards. Proper permitting and inspection thereby advance resident safety, support insurability requirements, and protect property values by confirming that modifications meet established criteria instead of creating latent deficiencies.

The Building Inspector, appointed by the Mayor with Board approval, will administer the updated ordinance, review applications, and conduct inspections to ensure compliance.

The ordinance establishes standardized application processes, an updated fee schedule, permit expiration and extension rules, certificate of occupancy requirements, penalties, and options for fee waivers on qualifying projects.

Residents and contractors can obtain application forms and instructions from the City Clerk at City Hall or through the City’s website at www.cityofvanburenmo.gov. Permit records will be available for public inspection.

Questions regarding the building permit process should be directed to the City Clerk or submitted via the City’s website at www.cityofvanburenmo.gov.

This initiative forms part of broader City efforts to improve infrastructure, regulatory consistency, and service delivery for Van Buren residents.
